I am in Seattle now but left this photo in because it reminds me of a happy moment when a friend who was passing by took this photo spontaneously
Greetings,

There is so much going on that it is hard to follow. Imagine what it feels like being bombarded by missiles for 23 days.

Here is a potpourri of somewhat connected thoughts.

My nephew who was in the process of being released from the IDF had been called back because of the war. When you have people you love in the war then the war becomes personal. It is no longer something that happens to someone else, it is in your life.

History shmistory: In the 19th century we were trying to assimilate and be like everyone else. This did not end up very well as history attests to. Then we said: lets have our own place and it still seems killing Jewish people (now living in Israel) is an obsession with millions of people around the globe,  so.. what is a Jew to do???

I am always looking for simple ways to think, I do not like having my brain cluttered with a million thoughts. So here is one: What if someone's life purpose was killing you personally and was using a child to protect himself?! What would you and I do? Is it any different for Israel ?!

We all think we are right. But does it lead anywhere? Maybe we can let go of the need to be right and focus on what works? What will bring the most benefit to all? Quite an impossible idea to contemplate these days.

So here is a joke about being right. The president goes to visit the jail to find inmates to give amnesty to. Every inmate he meets claims they are innocent except for one inmate who said he was there because of the wrong he committed.

The president immediately decreed that this inmate must be released to protect all the other pure innocent prisoners from his bad influence.

If any of you would like to express their sentiments towards Israel and Israelis at this time you may send it to me and I will pass it on.

 In peace

Funny Israel
Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. This way they will be a mile away with no shoes.
Eli Harari, A friend from Israel is writing
This morning at 2:30 am we were awakened by a siren, a missile was making its way to Tel Aviv from Gaza- what a strange, strange feeling, and then back to bed realizing that another million people had to run for cover with their small children- Now tell me, someone, who does things like that? normal people or blood thirsty freaks who glorify death?

I have seen the face of Evil and lies and deceit and cruelty of Hamas and then right next to that I have seen the face of hypocrisy and ignorance of a fake world that is a creature of comfort and fear, who condemn my nation and me for atrocities committed against the Palestinians...really... can't you all bloody see that they kill their own people, are you all so afraid to look in case the Muslim in your countries will come after you?

I felt the pain of dying young soldiers who gave their life to protect meŚ„ I felt abandoned by my so called friends around the world who did not even bother to write a small note to ask how I am? and they are so called illumined developing people...it is amazing how segregated people make themselves by simply not caring...

I have seen how I react under pressure and I was pleased
and...I became extremely proud to be part of this nation, a Jew and Israeli, which for a long time I wasn't clear with...I only hope that Israelis will continue to unite after it is over...this time not united because oh Hamas or of other outside threat but because they truly value each other's life...I can only guarantee myself in that!

Now that I am in Israel, I wish to say hello to everyone. Hopefully you are well.

I was awed by how peaceful people feel here at Efrat, that is where my parents live. Such a peaceful life on Shabbat.  Everyone was snowed in, the Jews, the Arabs the animals too, we all go through similar experiences in some ways. When the white is all around it is for everyone.

On Shabbat (Friday night) after midnight I was strolling through the quiet center of Efrat , where some youths, completely oblivious to a stranger, me, engrossed in there teenage celebration of laughter and chats, running and giggling, hushed conversations. Especially it was refreshing to see 2 teenage girls passing me by giggling and laughing, running somewhere and nowhere down the hill, feeling completely safe passing few inches from me, not even noticing my existence. It was just pure peace as life was meant to be.  Full of peace.

This morning at Tel Azeka

It was a sleepless night and I drove early in the morning into a beautiful sunny day, down the Judean hills. Since I had some extra time I took a sharp left turn into a mountain road, which I assumed will be, at such an early time, serene and quiet. Not so. After few minutes of enjoying the ambiance of a quiet morning on a mountain top, with the trees and terraces and an ancient well, all kind of heavy equipment begun to appear up the narrow meandering gravel road, including a semitrailer which blocked my way going down the mountain. I did though enjoyed a few moments of total quietude before all this happened. Watch this video taken few minutes before all that happened.

Kineret
Kineret surprise surprise..

The kineret is making lots of headlines nowadays. Today it was even declared that we are not in a water shortage any longer and that we became The most water sufficient industrialized country in the world, a little bit premature perhaps. Last week storm brought huge amount of water and some local floods and disasters as well. The Kineret shot up some 89 centimeters, more than half of the yearly average rise. partly the reason for the sharp rise is that Israel is desalinating 330 million metric cubes of water a year which is half of the drinking water. This way we have to draw less water from the lake. Paradoxically, the water price keep rising, probably because the desalinization is done by private companies and is subjected to private contracts.

Less spoken of but as important is the mountain aquifer, it brings some 350 million metric cubes a year. It is hidden beneath the ground of cause and measurements are taken place only once a month. It will take a while until we know how this last storm affected this water reservoir.

 Lets wait..

Greetings,

How come we do not have a Jewish holiday today?! The 29th day of November 1947 was the day Israel received the UN mandate for a Jewish state. That is today 65 years ago. It was pivotal, finally we had a "kosher" state, not just a dream. But of cause the war started soon after and we are still in the same situation 65 years later.

If you would like to be depressed read the Debka Files. I have been reading it for years. It almost always made me want to run the other way. But now for the first time I am hearing a different tone. Something like.. there is hope.. maybe.. just maybe.. things are changing for the better.

A friend of mine wrote in his facebook: "in a proper world the dome of the sky will be void of iron", luu yehee (may it be so)

I would rather use the real estate of my 100,000,000,000 brain cells to look for hope and signs of a better future rather than staying in the cycles of resentment. The future will not be different unless I can see it different, it is a catch 22.

How about the beauty of Israel? Sweet memories of the land? Special people? Things you will never hear about unless you read Israel Ramble...(That was clever ...)

For example, I have just read how in the middle of the war, when rockets were showering the south of Israel, a cancer afflicted Palestinian girl has been transferred from Gazaby Israelis to get a special expensive drug to save her life in Achilov, a Israeli hospital.

Humanity is everywhere and we all may receive and give it, and these kind of kindness moves me and I would rather fill up my mind, soul and brain with these kind of things and how may we/I grow them.

Read on.. and be at peace,

When rain is finally coming
Listen and enjoy, it is a Israeli children song about thounders and lightening

It is a very aromatic experience when rain is finally coming. The soil has been dry for many months and is yearning and everything in it and upon it is too.

My first memory is of rain. I believe I was less than 3 years old, walking with my mom by the Kibbutz huge dining room and suddenly the sky opened and we got drenched in no time, We flew into the safety of the little parlor or hall connecting the "washing your hands chapel" with the main dining room.

Now I am watching footage of rain in Israel,  it can be very dramatic, with lightening, thunders and of cause the scent of fresh rain. Our biology teacher, I can still hear in my head, will say, well, it is just some microorganisms being awakened, perked up by the moisture, that's all. But for a poet or a loving couple or a child that's everything, a pleasing moment in time, even the memory of it can make sparks in one's soul, and here is the proof.

Going back, or rather forward, to Israel for the coming few months, I am looking forward to have this experience again. Sometimes I can sense this sweet fresh rain scent here in Seattle, a fleeting moment, when the land had been a little dry for few days. and then it brings sweet memories of fresh rain in the holy land. So if you have the impression of my love to the land, you are so.... right.

So now that I have raved and ranted about scents and rains, what a jolly thing it can be, who needs an Iron Dome at all?! Who needs war?! Who needs tanks and canons?! Unfortunately we all do. But what a shame that is the state of affairs. Put enough people in a small enough space and see what happens.. remember the time when we were only 3 billions? now we are 7. Of cause there are many more factors. But.. do not forget the fresh scent of the rain.

 In jest,
  Boaz Pnini

A trip to the Flour Cave
My dad and I in the Flour Cave all these years ago
Many years ago, my dad and I went to the Flour Cave in the Judean desert.  It was a momentous event for me. I thought it was real flour. It was of cause very fine desert sand and when you crawl through the steep and dusty crevices of the cave you come out , well, dusty. I remember looking forward to that trip for a long time. I am not sure any more what was so .... important and encompassing about it, but it was.

When I called my dad yesterday to ask what he remembers, he only remembered that we were dusty, what a pity. Momentous moments of life turn into dust merely by time. But the sense of total awe is never diminished, it does not have to.

I love this area of Israel and hope to visit it soon.
